Best Road Trips From Perth

It’s safe to say Western Australia is spoilt for choice when it comes to road trip ideas within the state. You can spend a couple of hours or even a couple of days on the road and you’ll be sure to find a beautiful destination at the end. As Western Australia is the biggest state covering a whopping 2.5 million square kilometres, we recommend breaking your road trips up into smaller manageable chunks and throughout this blog we will give you a few local tips and tricks to help guide your next adventure. We have included a trip north and also a few down south and they all offer something a little different. First we are making the rather large journey north up to Broome!
Broome
Distance: 2048 km from Perth
Duration: This is a hugely solid drive and we recommend splitting the travel up between a few days.
Best for: With plenty to see and do, Broome is sure to satisfy a range of travellers needs and wants!
This exotic town was once the pearling capital of the world and drew its population from a range of nations whose people came on the promise of pearls and in the hope of making a fortune. Its colourful history has resulted in a multicultural feel.
Broome is famous for Cable Beach – all 22 kilometres of it. This is undoubtedly one of the world’s most stunning beaches – a pure white band bordering a brilliant blue ocean. Just the place for lazy days and sunset camel rides.
Tour the Willie Creek Pearl Farm, or relax poolside at one of many easygoing resorts. At Gantheaume Point, near Broome, dinosaur footprints are also preserved in rock. Don’t forget to visit Sun Pictures to watch a movie under the stars while relaxing in a deck chair.
Visit Broome on a full moon and be rewarded with this uncommon optical illusion: moonlight reflecting in puddles on the mudflats at low tide looks like a stairway to heaven. It happens between March and October for two to three nights a month. Town Beach is among the best viewing places and a market coincides with the event.
There are a few caravan parks on offer in Broome but if you are wanting to be in close walking proximity to Cable beach then the RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park is the spot for you. This park has a range of accommodation options including both powered caravan sites and pet-friendly powered sites. If you are travelling with kids you will be glad to know there is a big saltwater swimming pool and a mini-golf course.

Margaret River
Distance: 270 km from Perth
Duration: This is only about a 3-hour drive from Perth.
Best for: This road trip suggestion will be best suited for travellers who want to kick back and enjoy outstanding wine and delicious food.
Autumn is one of the best time’s to be captivated by Margaret River’s natural beauty. The vine leaves are turning golden, the surf is pumping and the days are still warm with fresh nights.
In the middle of March head to the Margaret River region for all the great food and wine that make this area so special. There is a variety of activities for everyone including concerts, The Chocolate Factory, The Fudge Factory, Supa Golf, Town Square Markets, Eagles Heritage Raptor Wildlife Park, Surfing, swimming, walking trails, Yallingup Maze and of course the great food and wine tours. If you are unable to make it down to Margaret River in the Autumn, don’t worry! This area is truly beautiful all year round. The Margaret River region is exploding with great wineries and restaurants but some to note are Vasse Felix (affectionately known as the Matriarch of the regional vineyards), Leeuwin Estate and Voyager Estate.
The caravan park options in the Margaret River region are quite spread out so you really need to know what landmarks and attractions you would like to be close to. If you are not too sure, the BIG4 Taunton Farm Margaret River comes highly rated by fellow travellers and also has a range of site options starting from $47 per night.

Albany
Distance: 418 km from Perth
Duration: detail recommended length of trip e.g. 3 days
Best for: this road trip is suitable for all animals and adventure lovers.
Albany is a city located on the southern tip of Western Australia. There are many draw cards that bring travellers to the region but one, in particular, is for the annual Humpback & Southern Right Whale migration
Prepare to be mesmerized by these gentle giants as they make their way along the coast during migration. In late April, they travel from the food-rich southern ocean to breeding grounds in the warm northern waters. Then, in August, they return south to the cold seas to grow and mature.
In Western Australia, you’re most likely to spot a humpback, southern right or blue whale on a whale watching tour. The best time to observe these serene mammals is at midday when the sun is directly overhead and there are many great vantage points on the beaches and capes around the area. If you are wanting to get a little closer to the action, jump on board one of the many whale watching boat tours available.
From August to October whales can be spotted frolicking and playing in King George Sound, Albany. For a prime viewing location, stay at the BIG4 Middleton Beach Holiday Park. This park has multiple accommodation options including sites with en suites! BIG4 parks really meet the brief when you are getting away with the whole family as they include many activities and facilities to please all members including a swimming pool, hydro spa, billiards table and air hockey tables, Mini movie theatre and Book exchange.. Just to name a few!
